i do not use the term "masterpiece" liberally or lightly, for if you use such a term too much it loses all meaning. it should be one that is reserved for actual works of a legitimate master of his craft yet has in the age of the internet become grossly overused and applied in places where it should not be.
that being said, this piece is a fucking masterpiece. uematsu is brilliant.
brawl was my favorite smash game along with melee a long while ago. i played both about equally in my younger days because despite not owning a gamecube a buddy who was older than me knew all the shit about wii modding before i did so he was able to put a bunch of stuff on there. many a night did i stay up late unlocking mewtwo in melee and playing subspace in brawl. people like to rag on brawl and while tripping is kinda gay and the character balance is off the wall, who gives a shit? they're fun party games aimed primarily at children and normal[slur]s who just so happened to own a wii. brawl is a great party game and people who take smash seriously are actually subhuman. "huhgueghurhntbiuegbtihub brawl has no directional air dash and no moonwalking and no automatic wavebird fleshlight extention" who cares? have fun with the silly game, for crying out loud. if a game is actually bad then i have zero problems with laying it to it for legitimate reasons but brawl is a polished and well made game with flaws that are only seen by melee players. rabid nintendo fans are a plague, and i know that probably sounds rich coming from me - the number one sega bootlicker - but it is the case that i am perfectly willing to admit when i dislike sega games and that certianly not all of them knock it out of the park. tendies are rabid and only dislike things when the big youtubers tell them to, hence the modern reputation of brawl. i'm glad that people are catching on to how bullshit totk was. 6 years of dev time and all they added were two (not very fleshed out) maps and garrysmod physics and people shit their pants. majoras mask came out a year after oot and was more or less entirely new content-wise despite running on the same engine as oot. some people complain about "muh reused assets" but reusing character models to save on time is not at all the same as reusing the entire fucking map and changing little things. if majora's mask reused all of oot's overworld and added some extra overworld content people would have hated it and rightfully seen it as lazy if most of the game took place there. modern nintendo is more or less immune to all criticism because of the rabid nature of their western fanbase. obviously i like nintendo. i'm just not partial to how they've been operating since iwata passed and post-odyssey. their game sales tactics now are safe and scummy. never again will the pure soul of something like the year of luigi be seen in nintendo, sadly.
all of the smash games have great soundtracks, though. i am very fond of brawl's especially. uematsu really killed it with this theme, he's great. people like to harp on about yoko shimomura but i genuinely think uematsu is on a whole other level. he's a real fuckin' master. love the first seven ff games to death. you can really see his growth as a composer over that period and it peaked with 7 and the cd-quality audio. ff7 is great. it's one of the few games that has such a high amount of hype around it that actually manages to live up to it. i played the first bit of the remake and had great amounts of fun with it contrary to what one would assume based on my stances on most remakes. will i play part 2? probably not. unless they do some buttfuck insane shit that schizos have been predicting for years (not killing off aeris, namely) then i might consider it. i'm all for a reimagining in a different timeline of the story and would see it as a cool alternative to the original. the game is probably going to be like 100 hours long and i don't have time for that shit anymore. i think i have like, near 40 hours in ff7 maybe. that's already a lot of time to be playing an entire game, but modern games are getting too long. i also hope that they don't cut some of the funny lines in the upcoming parts. i want to see hojo talking about getting a tan and cloud saying "let's mosey" before the final fight. zero compromise in staying true the original translation, baby. it's part of the charm in a game like ff7 that frankly doesn't have a half-bad translation aside from some grammatical errors. ff7 is a light-hearted game with a serious moments in-between and i think people don't get that because of the sheer amount of secondaries who only know about the bombing mission at the start of the game and sephiroth by pop-culture-osmosis and smash. kinda unrelated but remember when kazuya was announced for ultimate and tendies had literally no idea who he was? that shit was hilarious. tekkenchads are too cool for the average nintendo soycuck to give a shit about kaz.
