168it took me a very long time to conclude that undertale is a good game. i think the reputation of it being reddit: the game is better suited for deltarune (terrible game) because undertale really exudes passion throughout the entire thing. yeah, some shit is gay and cringe in it - i'm not too fond of tumblr-esque humor which can get a bit heavy handed - but i think that's unironically better than if it was trying too hard or not trying hard enough. it's a work of passion and i think that matters a lot more than a work made out of necessity or delusion. undertale is better than 90% of indie games i've played. lord knows i've played a lot of indie games but really the only indies i like more are platformers. n+, vvvvvv, celeste (fuck off, it's still fun) and so on and so fourth. never been big on indie rpgs bar lisa the painful and yiik. undertale has honest heart and goddamnit that matters a lot. it is derivitive, yes. it's literally just all of the things toby fox liked mixed together. but like, what isn't? the legend of zelda was based on a bunch of shit miyamoto liked doing in his youth, sonic was literally inspired by naka playing mario as fast as he could, how are these any different from muh earthbound-like? undertale is unique enough in what it combines to loop back around to being an original work, just as everything in human history has been. it's just 2hu + mother + tumblr + yume nikki but innovates and creates enough to be far removed from the original sources of inspiration. this, indeed, is my problem with most modern indie games. any game under a genre with the "-like" suffix is bullshit and the creators should be ashamed of being so openly derivitive and lacking in inspiration beyond "[x] is fun, what if we made it again (but worse)" because that is painfully annoying. every "-like" game is another game to be added to the list of gay shit i won't ever play. y'know what other term i hate? i'm sure you've guessed by now, i fucking loathe the title of "metroidvania". that term is the verbal version of soycucks. you know any motherfucker who refers to shit as a metroidvania has not only never played metroid or castlevania (bar sotn because that's the one that secondaries think is the best. wrong answer, bitch. the best castlevania is drac x) but also thinks that they're above everyone else for liking the literal worst indie genre to ever exist. anyways, back on track. undertale is good. i don't like to point to specific moments in the game that i like because that would be boring and has been done to death a million times. yes, i like the mettaton game show. yes, i like the asgore fight. same song and dance that people have been going on about for nearly ten years.
fuck. ten years? that's pretty funny. time flies, brother.
instead, i prefer in the case of a game like undertale to talk about why i like it over whatever gameplay or story bullshit. of course the game is fun, it's just comically easy touhou for people who've never played a bullet hell. of course the story is fun, it was really unique for the time and frankly still is. people try and fail to ape undertale and it will never work. hell, i don't think that deltarune apes undertale well. i've already gone over the fact that i hold great amounts of respect for the sheer amount of earnestness in the game itself and i think that's an incredibly valuable part of a game, so frankly i don't really know what else i can say. that level of care for any given work is admirable and thus will be seen in every aspect of the game. it translates over to every little detail. yeah, the fanbase is gay. always was and always will be, but i don't believe that the quality of the fans of a work determine the quality of the work itself. with a work like undertale that is made to attract a certain type of person some of the people who buy in to it will be extreme and vocal and gay. but who the fuck cares? i'm a sonic fan, and lord knows sonic fans have a terrible reputation thanks to the same level of loud and vocal fans. if something is good then there should be no shame in admitting such.
undertale is good. you know damn well that if it would bad i'd have no quams with ripping in to it for laughs, because making fun of stuff will always be fun. but i can't bring myself to genuinely knock undertale beyond little legitimate nitpicks i have.
also, forgot to mention: did you pick up on the references to the other versions of megalovania in this one? the siren towards the start is a nod to the cogdis one and there's a little bit from the homestuck one too. i know not the first thing about either cogdis or homestuck but i do like the versions of the song from those. i also figured out how to use soundfont .wav samples in ultrabox and added the orchestra hits to megalovania. might do some more with those in the future but because of how annoying they are to import they'll probably just be used as bonus instruments.
