Since I just played Dottie Flowers and it bills itself as a Turrican fan-game, I figured it's about darned time I try some of the Turrican games. I've largely avoided these because they can be known for "Level Design is my Passion" syndrome; some of the games feature overwhelmingly confusing maps, while others just have extremely unforgiving platforming or enemies.

I decided to start with the SNES Super Turrican games since they seemed like they might be the least confusing to navigate, and because I could easily play them on the actual console just like I did for Dottie Flowers. I'm not actually sure how many I'll play outside of these, but I'm at least planning to look at Mega Turrican, and I do intend to play Rendering Ranger R2 as well.

Super Turrican's levels definitely seem more straightforward than I'd expect on average from the series, though there are still a few levels that feel like they promote at least a little bit of exploration... although once you get into the 2nd world it feels more like the game design punishes you for exploring.

The 3rd world is definitely the worst IMO - the levels aren't terribly interesting, and it features the absolute worst platforming in the entire game. I initially thought the 4th world's autoscroller level might be even worse, but I think I've ended up liking that one for the most part, although there is one specific set of jumps that can seem impossible depending on timing.

I was extremely surprised when I reached the end of the game; I wasn't expecting it to be as short as it was, nor did I expect the whole "waiter there's a Contra final level in my Turrican". (Though as I would find out when I got around to the Director's Cut, this would not have been as much of a surprise had I read the manual.)
