What do you get when you mix together Metroid, Portal, and The Legend of Zelda? You get Supraland, the surprise indie sleeper hit of 2019. I first discovered this humble game immediately after M.A.S.S. Builder and assumed it was a joke because of its $13.37 USD pricetag. To my surprise, what I ended up playing was one of the most unique FPS games in a long time. Supraland is a Metroidvania distilled down to its purest form. It doesn't waste the player's time with needless cutscenes, grinding, or skill trees. Rather, Supraland focuses 100% on exploring every inch of its overworld to find new items.
This video is a bit different than my usual fare, as everything you see after the jumpcut is a 100% blind run. While not necessarily the most fun to watch, Metroidvanias do play best from a completely fresh mindset. The "eureka" moments stand out as genuine (e.g. the blocked-off tunnel at 24:00 is actually the one from the intro), as does the frustration of trial-and-error puzzle solving. Unfortunately, the weakest part of Supraland is its sound design as there is very little ambience. Hearing the Unreal Tournament Jump Boots sound play thousands of times isn't exactly pleasant, either. A recent patch fixed the music cues not playing, though, so that helps.
Note that I'm playing Supraland with Depth of Field turned off using sg.PostProcessQuality=0 in GameUserSettings.ini. By default, Supraland has a hideous, blinding blur effect that doesn't actually hide any pop-in and in fact causes a slight performance hitch.
