Rad: Before the Adventure is a 3D platformer prototype by Knick-Knack Games made for a college capstone project. It's already gunning to be the next "A Hat in Time" with its movement options and addictive, collect-a-thon gameplay. The demo is pretty massive, clocking in at 2 1/2 hours if you're committed to finding 100% of the items. Unfortunately, there are some pretty glaring issues at the moment like janky physics, poor hit feedback, no automatic camera for gamepads, motion blur, and some horrible optimization. The draw distance seems to cause a bottleneck since the framerate wouldn't increase even if I disabled the HRTF mod, manually lowered the resolution to 480p, and disabled all lighting and post-processing.
Even worse: there's no saving, so you have to collect everything in one shot!
Still, Rad: Before the Adventure serves as a magnificent demonstration of HRTF technology much like A Hat in Time before it. The level design is spawling by itself, but being able to hear ocean waves around you while cranes move around above you and bells chime in the distance really makes you feel like you're inside the game world. I wish Knick-Knack Games luck for the future, as Rad's already better than Yooka-Laylee in every single way.
