Surviving Mars #6 — Mining Domes and Meteor Showers
Our mining dome is under construction, a new colonist is born for the first time on the Red Planet which gives us free supply drops, and we get to test some prototype rocket engines! Everything is looking just peachy!
The dome is built, so is the metal extractor, now we need to hire some geologists and send them to that dome. The filtering system per-dome is great for this purpose. We have no shuttles yet, so they'll have to make do, but it shouldn't be much of an issue. And with the new dome furnished with a living complex, we can even afford to bring in more colonists!
It's also a prime spot for machine parts factory, so why not place it there as well?
Then we get a notification about a meteor storm... that we caused ourselves by sending the expedition. Yep, that's right. That's what this expedition does. Thankfully it misses our colony and leaves some metal deposits and anomalies behind, so it's a net positive.
In case it does become a problem in the future, though, let's build an infirmary. And learn how to terraform the landscape and create a slope so we can get on top of that plateau in the first place. Can't make use of the anomalies and metals if we can't get up there after all.
Electricity can be an issue in the near future, since the machine part factory uses a metric ton of it, more than anything else we have here. Or it would've been an issue, if we hadn't discovered that opening Stirling generators doubles their power output at the cost of some dust buildup. Bring the dust, I say!
We grab another shipment of colonists, and install a nice garden in the mining dome... which promptly gets torn down to make space for an electronics factory. I'm sorry, people of Mars, but it's more important.
Soon after, the first colonist dies of natural causes. I'm sure it's just correlation and not causation.

Cultivate your own food, mine minerals or just relax by the bar after a hard day’s work. Most important of all, though, is keeping your colonists alive. Not an easy task on a strange new planet.
