System Shock is the prime example of classic exploratory gaming. Limited narrative, heavy aesthetic, and go! Damn the learning curve, figure things out!

I find such things liberating, if at times subtly frustrating. Which does seem to be the point, at times. A remake at its core, I appreciate how System Shock still embodies its 90s influence, even so far as to include many retro-styled textures. The combat is dangerous, the map winding, and the narrative buried in the exploration.

In other words, it's a classic FPS. I can imagine that not many people enjoyed the game, expecting something akin to Bioshock, which was a successor at heart, if not in style. But I found myself enjoying System Shock the more I played, growing into the exploratory nature and learning the little nuances of collecting and fighting.

It truly is a game that offers more to the gamer when the gamer is willing to invest more into the offering. Sometimes, you want a game that simply wants to BE.
