Well, I found another exit, another stage. I found the items on that stage. Honestly, there are some decent puzzle-ish bits here. Though those bits really showcase that this was not a game meant for Tails. His ability to fly breaks things, hence the areas with the wind that you can't see until you start flying. An obvious work-around for a problem that seems created by a shift in IP late in development.

What I have not found is the way forward. Because I am still locked behind the ship area in a zone that does a ton of damage. And I don't have the shield. I have no idea where it is.
