Insane!
That's the one word I can think of to sum up both the construction of this demo and the
final product, itself. To begin, only the first minute of this demo is truly TAS. From
the time I pick up the RL to the end, it's 100% built. Why did I do this? Well, for
starters, I was doing some manipulating in that first minute, anyway(e.g., knocking the
first Arch-Vile into his pain state on the first hit). I made it up to the Red Key
area(with all those Former Humans) and couldn't seem to get the results I wanted with the
Chaingun. It just wasn't fast enough; so, I decided to build the entire Red Key area.
However, after building most of the segment, when I picked up the Red Key and tried
switching to the RL, I discovered I'd forgotten it! So, I had to throw away a perfectly
good minute of demo and resume from the one minute mark. The thing was, I was really
happy with how the Red Key segment looked, especially the accuracy. Together with the
frustration of trying to recreate that accuracy with slow-motion, I gave up altogether
and decided to go 100% built.
During the build I made two screw-ups in addition to forgetting the RL. The second also
required rebuilding most of the Red Key area. I tell you, there's nothing more annoying
than having to redo a near-perfect segment due to one stupid mistake. In these cases(both
involving the Chaingun), after the kill, while moving on I turned one tic too soon and
missed the final hit that killed the target. In both cases I had to go by there again and
could easily have finished the job without losing any time, but such a glaring flaw would
haunt me to no end.
With all that said, I'm very happy with the resulting demo. My favorite moment would
probably be the Arachnotron battle at the Yellow Key. I get in, kill all three, grab the
key and get out just before the door closes. Of course, the start of the Red Key area is
great, too(Chaingunning all the Former Humans almost without stopping). Not to mention
the fact that not only did I make my target time(ten minutes), I was only three seconds
short of a full ten minute improvement.
As to route improvements, the level is pretty linear. The biggest improvements over Kai's
demo are skipping the two thirty second doors. The first one is the toughest and probably
not reliable in a normal run, due to being halfway into the demo. Right before the room
with the three HKs and one Baron(on the way to the Blue Key) you have to skip a Linedef.
The second is so easy I'm amazed Kai missed it. When you teleport into the Blue Key
chamber all you have to do is run straight forward and hit the switch before the door
blocks it. The only obstacles here are the three Spectres. Just don't move until you're
able to kill them.
Well then, with that most daunting task out of the way, I can finally move on. And it only
took me five years to do it! :-)
