The Bar Scene from The Wolverine (2013). Both Voices Performed by Sam John

This scene from The Wolverine, originally performed by Hugh Jackman grounded the character to a level of humanity and realism that was unexplored in superhero movies. We see the basic understanding of right and wrong brought to the forefront, with the question of how far a man can go to bring about justice. It shows Logan for who he is, a man fighting his demons, and trying his best to keep them from consuming him while being the hero he never wanted to be.
When I started recording this scene, I knew I had to draw on character embodiment the most, channeling the last decades of Logan’s life spent fighting and losing everyone he loved, being compressed into the lower voice register I chose while also maintaining the characteristic growl of The Wolverine. I was able to work with these vocal choices and characterization cues to craft a video I am very proud of. Working with the reaction vocals and panicked breathing was a challenge but came out very well and added a lot to the overall performance.
This scene pushed me to work harder and layout the objectives of this deeply complex character. I loved portraying this stunning representation of Wolverine and this video serves as a tribute to the phenomenal actor that is, Hugh Jackman.
