I reckon Civilization 7 has the best combat system we've seen in a Civ game. I believe it builds positively on Civ 6's combat, and is significantly more nuanced than combat in Civilization 5. Though, it still 'feels' like civ combat, and maintains the core civ turn-based mechanics. Here I discuss how combat works in Civ 7 by assessing it in layers - the strategic map/ environmental conditions of combat, the units themselves (and the greater variety of design & combat abilities that they offer), as well as the new commanders. Finally, I'll talk about the wider strategy around combat - like influence, diplomacy, city state suzerain-ship, and leader promotions.
