In the last chapter of The Blackwell Epiphany, the lengthy story of Rosangela Blackwell and Joey Mallone comes to a noble end, as Joey helps Rosa (at least temporarily) regain her presence of mind, pulling her back into the world of the living and helping her escape the asylum to which she has been confined. Thereupon, Rosa teaches Madeline a lesson in altruism, using the collected energy to save all the imprisoned souls rather than destroy them - including even Madeline's own - and, with one last push, donate the last surviving part of her own soul to a good friend. All of this is complicated, convoluted, bittersweet, but ultimately satisfying... although, come to think of it, a world without ghosts is no place for Mr. Joey Mallone and his magic tie.
