Sonic Origins Plus - Game Review

Welcome back to the Veteran Game channel, folks! Today, we're taking a deep dive into the much-talked-about 2022 compilation, Sonic Origins Plus. This time around, it comes with more friends and a ton of Game Gear games. Let's get into all you need to know about Sonic Origins Plus.

No matter how many decades go by, we never tire of the original Sonic the Hedgehog adventures. The 90's games that soared in sales and ignited our imaginations, be it in 8 or 16-bit glory, are back. SEGA knows this, hence they've returned with Sonic Origins Plus for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC, coinciding with our favorite mascot's birthday.

As you might guess, this is an enhanced version of the Sonic Origins that stirred much interest a year ago. Now, we have all that original content, plus 12 Game Gear games. We also get the opportunity to play as Knuckles in Sonic CD or control Amy in all 16-bit games: Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Heck, you can even team her up with Tails!

This adds up to a total of 16 games, a respectable number including some titles that are quite unknown to the western audience.

Talking about new additions, the inclusion of Knuckles in Sonic CD is a welcome change, given the vertical nature of the game's levels and Knuckles' climbing and flying abilities. Adding Amy to these 16-bit games offers a fresh gaming experience. Sonic 3 & Knuckles' shields do not activate effects with her, but she can perform an aerial smash, and on landing, use her Piko Piko Hammer for horizontal attacks, useful against foes like worms.

But of course, the main course lies in the Game Gear games, which are presented as separate content within Missions mode. They remain unaltered, preserving their 4:3 ratio and are playable only with the characters from the original game. They also come with a feature allowing you to save your game progress in a single slot for each game.

The Game Gear game list includes Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Triple Trouble, Sonic Blast, Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Spinball, Sonic Drift, Sonic Drift 2, Tails' Sky Patrol, Tails' Adventure, and Doctor Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

As for the gameplay, we noticed a slight input lag, especially when jumping. It didn't ruin the experience, but it did lead to a few unexpected falls. Also, the Game Gear games appear with a large black border, which could have been reduced to use more screen space without stretching the image.

Coming to the pricing, if you already have the original Sonic Origins, the DLC with the Game Gear games and other extras from the Plus version costs 9.99 euros. If you're getting the entire game from scratch, you can grab the physical edition for 39.99 euros, which includes the base game, the Premium Fun and Classic Music expansion packs.

In conclusion, Sonic Origins Plus is a brilliant compilation overall, brimming with high-quality games both in terms of playability and visuals. They serve not only as a historical testament to Sonic's legacy but can also keep you entertained and challenged in today's time.

The content selection is indeed noteworthy, and enjoying the 16-bit classics in widescreen is an absolute delight for the eyes. If you're seeking uncomplicated summer fun and the comfort of feeling at home, Sonic Origins Plus is a safe bet that has managed to pull off a stunner. Yes, we went there.
