We've recently seen a trend where the gaming industry has tried to move away from single player games, in favor of multiplayer, shared world & service based games. Look at EA cancelling the Visceral Star Wars linear game lead by Amy Hennig. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, said that single player games do not have a big impact anymore, while companies like Activision now rely so heavily on franchises like Call of Duty and Destiny that their success depends on it. But meanwhile, the PS4 is a huge success thanks to great experiences like God of War and Detroit Become Human, with The Last of Us 2 and open world games like Spiderman and Death Stranding on the horizon. The Nintendo Switch has been doing very well too, mainly thanks to The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. Is it possible that the fight against single player games is a pointless and hopeless one? Obviously, yes it is.
