Played through the arcade mode on the normal difficulty level.
The House of the Dead was a real looker when it originally launched in arcades in 1996, pushing the Sega Model 2 hardware to its limits. The PC port doesn't look as good as the arcade version, but it does look and run a fair amount better than the still great Sega Saturn port.
HotD is still one of my favorite Sega light-gun shooters. It took and improved on nearly everything from Virtua Cop 1 and 2, and added the cheesiest B-Movie trappings imaginable. The horrendous voice acting, the eyeballs that go flying with headshots, the synth-rock soundtrack- all of it comes together to make for quite a memorable game, and not just for players! This title landed Sega in the political spotlight yet again, a couple years after Night Trap, for its violent content, though it didn't do much but to give Sega a load of free publicity.
I do have to wonder why this game seems to have been all but forgotten by Sega. HOTD2 got several releases, so it seems strange that this classic start to the series hadn't ever really gotten the same treatment, only being released on the Saturn and PC. I've read that they lost the source code to it a long time ago, but still - why haven't they at least attempted to emulate it for a rerelease?
