The Last of Us is defined in large parts by Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley's assured direction - and nowhere is this more apparent than the remarkable final sections of the game. After struggling for so long just to stay alive, Joel and Ellie's memorably giraffe-themed respite from the existential horror of the post-apocalypse comes as an immense relief to the player as well. Seeing as the protagonists have also reached a new stage in their relationship, it would be quite natural to interpret this as the long-awaited catharsis with which the story will wrap up. It takes a certain fearlessness to keep the narrative engine running at this point, but that's of course exactly what Naughty Dog does...
