I remember feeling that the conflict with the cannibals led by Nolan North was an unnecessary addition to the game's third act during my first playthrough, but what's noteworthy about this particular part is how it constantly switches between Joel and Ellie as playable characters. This is a smart way to build up tension, and represents a bit of narrative and cinematic flair you don't normally associate with action games even in the cutscene-heavy era of the last console generation (to which The Last of Us tangentially belongs).
