It's hard not to be enthralled by the detuned guitars and primal drums of Gustavo Santaolalla's innovative and unsettling score, but one of the most remarkable aspects of the sound design in The Last of Us is the almost uninterrupted silence during surprisingly long stretches of gameplay. In some of the stealth-oriented sections you can almost hear a pin drop, and the eerie absence of sound brilliantly underlines both the tension of being in a dangerous hostile environment and the post-apocalyptic sense of exploring a lonely urban wilderness which was once home to millions of people.
