559Alchemy was the root that would eventually spawn many real-life sciences, such as chemistry and metallurgy, and the goal of which was to improve the human condition, by way of healing the body, prolonging lifespan, and even amassing wealth. The most ancient of alchemical texts spoke of a substance that could do everything that an alchemist set out to do...the philosopher's stone! As legend has it, the stone was capable of transmuting common metals and ores into precious metals such as gold, as well as healing any injury or curing any illness, and could even be used to garner immortality. Sounds too good to be true, but that never stopped the many ambitious alchemists of the past!
