Deer in Mythology & Folklore
For thousands of years, deer have been vital to the survival of mankind, and as a result are featured in countless myths, legends and fables. They have been seen as symbols, companions and messengers to gods and spirits such as the Greek goddess Artemis, the Celtic figure Cernunnos, and the Shinto gods of Japan. Heroes pursue them as part of their personal quests, and protagonists may be magically transformed into them. And then there are some who drastically affect the lives of the mythical characters, acting as protectors, enemies, and signs of change to come.
