This was made and edited the week after Monster Business, and narrated the day after I narrated that one, in the hot summer of 2018. Maybe the fans were blowing? The inspiration being this whole video was the fact that I forgot to mention the cross-border trading in the original review, and so many other things, and the 15 minute limit on the channel when it just got started meant I didnt have time to go in to anything. Looking back, I feel the first review was actually sharper and more to the point than this one ended up being.

The Divide and Rule method to cut the enemy off from supplies means they cant restock their guard posts in the field. If you can join paths with a cut-off area, eventually the citizens will find the flag, and walk back to join you in your main castle - which you can then turn in to soldiers to fight the other enemies. This method usually means x4 blacksmiths need to be pumping out swords and shields from the start, but on the level I played in the review, it took a while to find the iron ore, and having done so, to plant the farms nearby and wait for them to grow food. So thats why most of the video is me waiting for the fields to grow, and feel all my miners, and get production going again. In my rush to complete the level, I attacked the main castle, and this really isnt necessary until the very end of the game, as the enemy castle was only able to command two guard huts, and not enough for a counter-strike at any point. Waiting for stranded citizens to go inside the enemy castle can take hours, and I did really want to wait for the sake of the review.

Hopefully I've shown a few more its and bobs here, like the fact you can attack enemy soldiers in the field by attacking a hut in a direct line with them, and this means the huts instantly get reinforcements from the main castle before the enemy knights get there. As a bonus, you often end up capturing the guard hut(s) they came from. I've only ever needed to build a warehouse once in the game, so mostly I dont bother, and knights cant train in the medium guard towers, so I dont use those either.

RTS was a small market back when this game came out, but unlike Populous or Powermonger, a lot more time is dedicated to slowly building your resources, and running a smooth economy is just as important as war mongering. The Settlers has a whole load of 'see it - done it' moments, where the aim is to see an opportunity for expansion (chop the tree, mine the rock) and just do it. The action is not on the same level as Dune II, but the later Settlers games are often not quite as fondly remembered as this one. Its a game which in often instantly absorbing, and pays you back when those little achievements become your biggest success. For this I gave it a 9.5 out of 10. Why not a 10? Well, you can shape and flatten land in fields but not hills as you mine them away, and there is no irrigation, seasons, or even weather in the game (it was in Powermonger); and water channels and water wheels would have helped the feeling of cultivating the land and its industry. The endless stranded citizens scenario is also apparent in some cases. Apart from that its as good as it gets.
