Sword of Sodan (Amiga) - A Playguide and Review - by LemonAmiga.com
🕹️ Sword of Sodan is a side scrolling hack 'em up from 1989, with huge sprites, and collectable powerups. It got a roasting on the A500 thanks to jerky scrolling and clunky controls, so lets see if the game plays any better with a real CPU behind it. :)

I know many people have differing opinions about stuff, so if I say I quite like this game, its doesnt mean thats the general consensus. This game was panned, largely because it tried to go further than the technology could cope with, and the game became clunky and no fun. When I played it, I noticed the aspect was made in NTSC compatible mode, so the first thing to do was switch to NTSC and get full screen graphics. Then with a fast CPU, the game seemed to open up a bit more. Sure its still quite clunky, but those sound effects are great sometimes. Its a pity there isnt so much more to the game than I show in the video. The last few levels seem quite easy on the longplay, so there was potential here for something special, but I guess the people who played this either gave up, or effortlessly completed it, and either way wrote it off as a game which could have been so much more.
Id only seen screenshots before when I played and recorded this, so I was going in cold and seeing how far I could get. Later I looked up my progress on the longplay, and watched the other reviews online. A relatively quick and easy review to make, compared to some I've edited this year.
Danscore:
Sword of Sodan has colourful pixelart scrolling backgrounds and a sprinkle of sound effects to give it an atmosphere. The enemies are also tall. On the other side, its a case of fancy graphics dont make a classic game. The levels dont last long enough, and the format of the game means it can be easy to get through in just over 20 minutes. Thats not much value considering the game came out for £25 - thats over a pound a minute! Even premium rate sex lines are cheaper than that (erm, so Im told). In the end this lacklustre lack of longevity drops my score down to a 6/10.
