Gameplay of the first levels of The Terminator: Rampage, a first-person action game released in 1993 by Bethesda Softworks. Yes, the same Bethesda currently famous for its successful role-playing games of the The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series, and that very recently they released the highly anticipated Starfield.

In the 90's they released several games under the license of the famous movie franchise The Terminator created by James Cameron. This is one of them. As you can see, the game is highly inpired by Wolfenstein 3D, with a slightly more advanced engine (there are textures on floors and ceilings as well as some primitive lighting effects), however, already outdated by the time, because that same year Doom was released. Although we already know that id Software played in another league thanks to programming and design geniuses like John Carmack and John Romero.

I put this gameplay in my "playing good MS-DOS games" section, however, I've been tempted to put it in the "playing crappy games" one, because the game has not aged well neither visually nor playably (Wolfenstein 3D is still more fun to play), and has a very clunky gameplay, plus a framerate that borders on unplayable and a too low resolution, but at least it's better than other similar games released at the time.

The levels are visually varied as far as I've played, the music is decent and interactive, and the game tries to go a bit further by adding bactracking, as the main objective of the game is to get the pieces of a powerful weapon in order to defeat the final enemy. However, I don't know the levels, so I just find the downstairs to reach the following levels, aiming to show as much of the game as possible, until I reach the 4th one, where I run out of ammo and end up dying. At the beginning the game seems easy, but you barely get ammunition and first aid kits are even scarcer, so reaching the end must be certainly an odyssey.

I use DOS-BOX to play it under Windows 11. The game is not currently sold on any download platform, so you have to go to abandonware sites if you want to try it. This by the way is the CD version, which includes some cinematics.
