Mutation accumulation is a major problem for evolutionary theory. The majority of mutations are overwhelmingly deleterious. The mutation rate is high. And most mutations are unselectable. This means they are not seen by selection. As a result, they are only subject to genetic drift. These low-impact (but slightly deleterious mutations) build up in populations over time. The growing genetic load degenerates biological organisms. This is akin to rust on a car or typographical errors in a text. On their own (a single rust molecule or typographical error), they're inconsequential. But over time, they degenerate.
Evolutionists define fitness in terms of reproductive success. This is a worthless definition. The best definition of fitness is total functionality. The reason is simple: organisms can inherit deleterious mutations that aren't big enough to actually affect reproduction. A person with a slightly deleterious mutation can still have plenty of children. Most mutations are too subtle for selection to see. This means a great multitude of deleterious mutations can be passed on generation after generation without any real significant affect on an organisms ability to have children. But, like a ticking timebomb, the mutational load will eventually be so large that reproductive fitness will become negatively affected. By this time, the population is too far gone. And only total functionality can go down. Total functionality always goes down even in light of instances of local increases in fitness. There is no counterbalance to this major challenge to common descent.
