Critics of Biblical creation attack the Bible's account of origins by pointing to bottlenecks and inbreeding in the creation model. This is a strawman and an easily debunked challenge. There is no inbreeding problem in the Biblical creation model. Firstly, creationists don't explain the majority of DNA diversity as being the result of mutations. This is an evolutionary assumption. Creationists explain the majority of DNA differences and allelic variation as being the result of designed diversity or created heterozygosity (a state of DNA differences). Inbreeding reveals the hidden reservoir of genetic mistakes. Mutations are essentially typographical errors in the genomes of living organisms. Technically speaking, a mutation is an alteration in the nucleotide sequence of DNA. You need genetic mistakes for there to be an inbreeding problem. At creation, there are no mutations. And at the Flood, there are minimal mutations that have accumulated.
The creation model has 3 bottlenecks. These include creation (with Adam and Eve), the Flood (Noah, his wife, their 3 sons and their 3 wives), and the tower of Babel event. All 3 bottlenecks are short-lived. They are one generation (especially the creation and Flood bottlenecks) followed by rapid and exponential population growth. These facts would prevent any serious inbreeding-related problems.
On the other hand, the evolutionary model has an unanswerable inbreeding and bottleneck problem. Firstly, THEY DO explain the origin of DNA variation as being the result of mutations over time (mutations are overwhelmingly deleterious). The out of Africa bottleneck is not a one generation bottleneck that is followed up by rapid and exponential population growth. As a matter of fact, the evolutionary model proposes a long-term bottleneck (which is necessary to reduce levels of heterozygosity). The model suggests the human population was rapidly reduced to somewhere between 2 and 10,000 individuals. This would result in catastrophic effects on the health of these individuals. Recessive mutations would come to the forefront and lead to rapid genetic degeneration. It is not feasible for this population to one day spread out into all parts of the globe seizing dominion over the planet. This would be a near-extinction event that would lead to accelerated genetic entropy.
