Evolutionists argue for common descent by pointing to the existence of endogenous retroviruses. They argue ERVs are irrefutable evidence that humans and chimpanzees share a common ancestor. This is because humans and the great apes share ERVs in similar genetic locations.

The important question to ask is: are these really the ancient remnants of past viral infections, or are they created units of DNA function? The evidence strongly suggests that most ERV or ERV-like sequences represent created units of DNA function. ERV-like sequences are involved in many amazing functional roles. These fascinating DNA elements act in embryological development, they function in gene expression, gene regulation, determining cell types, aiding in the immune system, performing viral mimicry, and much more! And the reason ERVs share sequence similarity with exogenous retroviruses is because many of their functional roles are dependent upon their sequence similarity to extant retroviruses.

In summary, shared endogenous retroviruses across the biological world do not provide good evidence for evolutionism. As a matter of fact, the existence of these DNA elements are exactly what a Biblical creationist would expect if God designed the biological world. Many creatures share these DNA units for the same reason all kinds of vehicles have engines in common. This is good design.
