Donny Budinsky engages a skeptic of Young Earth Creation. The skeptic argues against the origins account found in Genesis by pointing to inbreeding. He argues Adam and Eve could not have been real because Adam and Eve's children would of had to marry their family members. According to him, this would result in disease and other inbreeding-related problems.
This common objection or challenge to Biblical creation is easily refuted. Inbreeding reveals the hidden reservoir of genetic mistakes that have accumulated over time. Inbreeding can result in recessive deleterious mutations coming to the forefront leading to disease and genetic damage. Inbreeding increases the chance that offspring will inherit harmful, recessive, mutations as they are passed on by parents. These deleterious effects result in alleles becoming homozygous (two identical alleles).
The reason this is not a problem for Adam, Eve, and their children is simply because Adam and Eve would not have been created with deleterious mutations. They would have been created with pre-existing diversity not due to mutation. Inbreeding is only an issue if there are mutations in the gene pool to be manifested outwardly in harmful effects. Mutation accumulation would have been minimal in the Pre-Flood world. This is one of the reasons why humans were able to live longer lives in the Pre-Flood and immediate Post-Flood world. We see a systematic decline in lifespans after the Flood. One of the reasons for this is mutation accumulation.
In summary, the early human population would not have been negatively affected by inbreeding and marrying close relatives because they would have been relatively free from genetic defects. Evolutionists that continue to advance this challenge demonstrate a lack of understanding in what the Biblical creation model teaches. It is essentially a strawman argument. Most Biblical creationists do not explain the vast majority of DNA differences as being the result of mutations. It is the evolutionary model that looks to DNA diversity as being the result of mutations over time.
