36Say what you will about CD Projekt, but the Polish studio has got to be one of the most confident and committed PC game developers to have emerged in this console-heavy era of ours. For various reasons I've never played more than the first chapter of their highly distinctive action RPG The Witcher, but ever since I bought a Steam version of the game quite some time ago I've been meaning to return to this memorable dark fantasy adventure to explore the morally ambiguous game world, awkwardly slash my way through hordes of monsters and, well, get laid a lot.
The Witcher is certainly a unique game in many ways - the weird rhythm-based combat and creepily objectifying "erotic elements" being the most notable divergences from the action RPG mainstream - and while I don't know if what the game tries to do is truly successful, I sure like the gritty atmosphere and sheer attention to detail in the unusually believable environments. Places like the sprawling fortress of Kaer Morhan with its crumbling exteriors and fading wall paintings feel like actual buildings with a history of their own rather than mere levels in a video game.
