The writing and voice acting in Risen seem to represent another one of the game's incremental improvements over the Gothic series. The majority of voice actors seem much more professional this time around, and the various accents (which so far have been very British) come off as considerably less forced. In Gothic 3 I mostly skipped the dialogue, but already in the first "town" of Risen I'm finding myself paying a lot more attention to the NPCs, their backstories, personalities and goals. Also, the settled areas are even more jam-packed with quests, which is especially welcome early on when your character is far too weak to wander around the countryside.
