okay before we start the pixel art is shit due entirely to my own fault lol. i fucked up the size of it the first arm of the cross and had to shrink the whole thing for it to fit and from there i lost all of the detail so uh whoops
ive talked about castlevania already ad nauseam so it would be redundant to restate my (correct and objective) views on the series and why i like it so much. as i've said previously scv4 is my favorite castlevania game, full stop. when this theme comes on during the final drac fight you know shit is getting real. sucks that the fight can be over very shortly after it starts if you know what you're doing. evne still, i love when games do that. it's pretty cool how a lot of my favorite games in any given series available on a nintendo console is pretty much always on the snes. my favorite zelda is link to the past, favorite mega man is x1, favorite dk game is country 1, favorite final fantasy is 5 (why did it take me so fucking long to play 5 it is fucking fantastic) and so on and so fourth. the only big snes title that i fucking loathe is super mario world. never in my entire life have i played a game so utterly sterile and boring, and my ass has played a lot of fucking piss boring games in my time. my main problem with mario world is that it is way too clean and polished in near every aspect and almost never in a way that benefits the experience. the only aspect of smw that i have a lot of love for is the soundtrack. for me, mario world is the least fun-to-handle game in the series. that accounts for the entire series, by the way, not just the original trilogy. even at a fast speed it feels overly heavy and tight - and not in the fun mmx way - tis more comparable to like, takeshi's challenge as far as jump physics go, the run is more unique but still just as sluggish to handle. bet you never thought you'd see a motherfucker compare mario world to takeshi's challenge, eh? the artstyle is so odd to me. on one hand it feels like it could have been the natural progression from mario 3, which had a great style, but on the other hand it feels really flat. yoshi's island is like everything that mario world could have been for me. fun to handle, fun to look at, with just as good of a soundtrack. mario world might actually be one of my least favorite games ever, now that i'm really thinking about it. my theory on what makes a game worth playing is basically that fun games are always appreciated and nice but shitty games can be just as fun no matter how bad they are if you arent taking them too seriously and taking jabs at them along the way. the only kind of game that is truly bad is a boring fucking game. truly boring games are very very hard to come by. even shit games, like takeshi's challenge, have value in just how absurdly bad they are. yknow why et is bad? not because of the graphics or whatever, because a lot of atari games looked like that and sometimes worse, but because et is fucking BORING. even in the 70s people knew that boring games were not at all worth your god damn time. this philosophy will never stop being relevant for me, because lord knows i am not sitting down to "play" le sony movie game of the year, because they're fucking BORING. now, that is not to say that games with story can never be fun, i'm a metal gear fan for crying out loud. but if a game is going to go all in on being a big fancy story then it should at least be interesting if it won't have gameplay to back it up.
have a grand day, gentlemen.
