Installing mods for first-person shooters is not something I've been doing much since the original Doom games (Alien TC FTW!), but a recent video from the affably incisive Noah Caldwell-Gervais inspired me to check out some Half-Life user-made creations. This is almost completely unknown territory for me since HL1 (and HL2, for that matter) is a game I played through exactly once and thought "nice, I liked that" before promptly uninstalling the whole thing and moving on to shiny new stuff like, eh...Requiem: Avenging Angel, I guess?

As its title suggests, Timeline by Ross Smith has an ambitious time travel theme and includes Nazis in every historical era because, well, *video games*! Ubiquitous fascists aside, there's an impressive amount of variety as the mod moves swiftly from modern laboratories to dimly lit Egyptian tombs and then on to the marble arches of ancient Rome and beyond. The level design is rudimentary even by 1998 standards but you certainly get what Smith was going for (although it can sometimes be hard to know where to go and what to do next). Also, the difficulty is very high right from the start - I've not thought much about the enemy AI of HL1 in the last 18 years or so, but those fire fights against human enemies can get really punishing...
