DOOM [Gameplay #5] - Pinky is the New Black
Aside from a strong technological foundation in the new idTech6 engine, DOOM's maps have the attention to detail you'd expect from a more story-oriented modern FPS like Bioshock - something which frankly feels a bit unnecessary given the strong gameplay focus - and that in turn surely put a clear limit on the number of unique environments id Software were able to create during the game's famously troubled development cycle. For this reason I was wondering whether DOOM would start reusing its levels during the campaign, and that did happen after returning from a Hell mission. With new weapons and enemies in place it doesn't really matter much whether you happen to have seen the surrounding architecture before or not, though. On a side note, I was happy to discover that there's a Replay Mission feature which lets you bring new progress (in terms of finding collectibles, upgrades etc.) into the rest of the campaign playthrough.
