Given the epic complexity of Paradox Interactive's grand strategy titles like Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings, one would think that a game by the same developer set in the infinite realms of space would also be infinitely more complicated. However, Stellaris actually doesn't seem quite as convoluted as the previous empire management sims from the studio. If nothing else, the complete absence of any semi-accurate representation of recorded history has enabled Paradox to create a considerably less daunting early game than the abrupt "in medias res" openings of a typical CK2 or EU4 campaign. In many ways, the space setting means that Stellaris hews closer to the comfortingly familiar 4X template established by games like Master of Orion than the sprawling metastructure of Europa Universalis. That's not going to make every player equally happy, but it obviously leads to a more gentle learning curve.

Since I don't have the patience, willpower or necessary amount of remaining brain cells to handle a "normal" Paradox game for more than thirty minutes or so, perhaps this brave new frontier for the Swedish developer could be the entry point I've been waiting for?
