The Turtles are seasoned heroes at the height of their powers when a mysterious enemy kidnaps Splinter and forces them through a series of twisted trials to rescue him. The story unfolds gradually through dialogue, revealing lore and details about this unique world, so pay attention to the narrative as you play.
What makes Splintered Fate stand out is its seamless blend of beat 'em-up action and roguelike mechanics. You won’t defeat the game on your first try. Each run requires persistence, as you’ll replay levels, collect currency, and grow stronger to face tougher enemies and bosses. Progress is tied to clearing rooms by defeating all enemies, with your character's abilities being crucial for survival.
Each Turtle has unique attacks, tools, and special abilities. Tools act as sub-weapons to help clear enemies but won't instantly kill them—this is where special abilities come in, delivering powerful attacks that can deal massive damage in a single hit. Each Turtle’s playstyle reflects their personality: Donnie excels at long-range combat, while Raph shines in close-quarters, dishing out heavy damage. I personally started with Leonardo but found myself gravitating toward Raph and Mikey for their high-damage, up-close fighting style.
As you progress, you can unlock and learn other Turtles' moves, adding strategy and variety to your playthrough. The game’s difficulty ramps up as you face off against major bosses like Leatherhead, Bebop, and Rocksteady. These encounters can quickly drain your health, requiring quick reflexes and strategic dodging to survive. Even mini-bosses present tough challenges, making every victory feel earned and rewarding.
It’s a pleasant surprise to see the Turtles thrive in a game that's not strictly a brawler. Splintered Fate proves that the roguelike genre is a perfect fit for them. If you're a fan of the Turtles or enjoy roguelikes, this is definitely a game to check out.
