One of the standout features is its roguelike progression mechanics—with each new attempt, players can choose different paths to uncover embers or rune fragments, which provide permanent upgrades to characters, skills, and abilities. This system introduces a satisfying balance of risk and reward, allowing players to customize their team with a wide variety of abilities that suit different playstyles.
The game’s combat is grid-based, where the movement and positioning of units play a critical role. Each unit can move a specific distance based on its class and equipped items. Players can equip each unit with two sets of weapons, adding depth and strategy to every encounter. For example, some units start with a sword and shield for close combat, while others—like mages—may carry a tome for magic attacks and a bow as a secondary weapon.
Weapon and armor types are another layer of complexity in combat. Each weapon is effective against certain armor types, and attacking an enemy’s weakness not only deals more damage but also triggers a special mechanic called chaining. Chaining allows other units to follow up on the attack, delivering even more damage. This becomes especially crucial when battling larger enemies that occupy multiple squares on the grid, requiring careful planning and synergy between units.
The flexibility of unit composition and the wide array of abilities create significant strategic depth, as players must think on their feet to adapt to various challenges. Whether you prefer to focus on offense, defense, or magic, there are countless ways to tailor your team to your preferred playstyle.
So far, my experiences with Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch have left me eager to see more. It’s shaping up to be one of the most challenging and rewarding tactical roguelikes I’ve played.
