0Deathless: Tales of Old Rus is a highly engaging and satisfying deck-builder currently in development. The battles are solid, the graphics are stunning, and the music evokes a grand, The Witcher 3-like atmosphere. The game blends traditional deck-building roguelite mechanics with a clever twist: each run presents a choice between three distinct paths, each offering rewards like new cards, relics, healing, or merchant shops. However, these paths come with their own bonuses and modifiers—some helpful, others detrimental—requiring you to adapt and choose the best path for your current situation. Strategic synergies between items are key to progressing through the game's later stages.
The overworld exploration stands out for its unique approach. Rather than navigating through interconnected nodes, you progress through a storybook, with each area described in evocative prose. The writing is immersive, adding a tactile dimension to the world—you can almost smell the drowners in the swamp.
Where Deathless: Tales of Old Rus truly excels is in its attention to detail. The character animations are exceptional, making the action feel fluid and engaging. Monsters jiggle as they take damage, and heroes perform graceful maneuvers across the 2D battlefield, all contributing to a dynamic and immersive experience. The art direction and animations alone set this game apart from others in the genre.
