Tokyo Warfare Game Sample - PC/Indie
Developed by Pablo Vidaurre Sanz of "Rusty Planet Games", Tokyo Warfare is a tank combat game and spiritual successor to Namco's mid 90s classic, "Tokyo Wars", with lots of graphics configurations, 1st & 3rd person perspective, six factions with over 20 playable tanks, lots of different skins for your tanks, more than a half dozen maps, more realistic controls, and single or online play (Online multiplayer 2-8 / Online co-op 2-6). Primary development has since ceased for the game, but a considerable effort was made to keep the game updated after it initially went on sale. The game had almost no tanks or maps and was pretty bare-bones... it could get away with this to an extent when you consider the sheer simplicity of Tokyo Wars, so the great deal of post-game content showed a lot of goodwill on the part of the dev. It reminds me of a Simple Series game.
The game still has its share of issues (psychic A.I. who tend to get stuck in awkward situations and are sitting ducks or impervious due to a bug, achievements and tanks don't unlock as they should, buggy interface, object collision issues, etc.) and certain features were removed, but they can be worked around for the most part and aren't frequent or game-breaking. At its core is a fun arcade-style shooter where each side can have up to three factions and can bring about two dozen different units at once on a stage... as such, the game might lag on lower-end PCs. Players start out with almost everything locked, but can unlock new factions and tanks by raising their player rank (earning points through different modes). Different tanks have different load-outs from missiles to cannon fire to armor piercing shells, and so on. Certain weapons are good for one-on-one engagement while others have spread capabilities and hurt anyone in a certain radius, and weapons can overheat if used for too long. I like that the tank and turret are controlled separately and you can hit targets easily from really far with your zoom-in scope.
The game has no story, no missions, and campaigns... it is simple, brief arcade fun. The biggest thing holding it back is the nearly dead online scene, which is expected with the game's small install base. It's quite fun if you can get others to play with, but only lasts a couple hours otherwise as you max out your rank to get the unlockables and achievements. I'd be interested in seeing what else this "team" comes up with (it's mostly developed by one person). It's currently on sale for $6 on Steam, which is fair, but it would be tough to recommend at regular price ($15) as it's rough around the edges. It is definitely a good first effort though. This is a basic video of the game in action. On one level, we activate an Earthquake to level 40% of the map. Rounds are set to be fairly short. Enjoy.
