Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory Walkthrough Part 6: Hokkaido
On July 4th, 2007, USS Clarence E. Walsh, sent to the Yellow Sea as American show of force meant to prevent the ongoing tensions between China. North Korea and Japan from escalating, is sunk with North Korean anti-ship missile after having its electronic systems disabled. Despite US Miliatry's Joint Chiefs being ready to declare the war against North Korea immediately, Lambert manages to dissuade them, aware that if the attack were deliberate act of war, North Koreans would rush towards the south of Korean peninsula at the same time and that Walsh's electronic warfare systems were built on the basis of Masse Kernels, meaning that whoever has the kernels disabled the ship's defensive systems, essentially making it an sitting duck even for nominally inferior North Korean artillery. Meanwhile, in Japan, Sam meets up with Douglas Shetland personally and warns him that he should get rid of Nedich both due to his past as an war criminal and likely involvement in the conspiracy related to Masse Kernels, although Shetland refuses as Sam cannot provide concrete proof of his underling's duplicity.
Soon afterwards, Sam is sent out to Hokkaido in order to track down both Zherkhezhi and Nedich, who are both located at the local retreat occupied exclusively by Displace International mercenaries reporting to Nedich, with Sam's mission being to assassinate Nedich as Third Echelon considers him too dangerous to be left alive and abduct Zherkhezhi as Third Echelon is aware that his information warfare expertise makes him the only man in the world competent enough to wield Masse Kernels to both disable USS Clarence E. Walsh, which was seen as the most technologically advanced ship of US' Navy before its destruction and possibly hack into North Korean artillery grid to launch an missile that sunk it and since they need him to explain the full nature of his relationship with Displace International and their role in the entire ordeal. After making his way through the resort, Sam successfully corners Nedich in his private suite and, upon interrogating him at knifepoint before killing him, discovers that Shetland was actually fully aware of Nedich's activities regarding his relocation of Zherkhezhi to Japan following the blackout in New York City, negating the theory that he went rogue and implying that he knows more about sinking of Clarence E. Walsh or more horrifyingly, was directly responsibe as he needed "more data" from Zherkhezhi following the New York and Tokyo blackouts. With Shetland coming to the resort personally, Sam heads towards the nearby teahouse where Zherkhezhi is located and upon arriving, evasedrops on an meeting between Zherkhezhi and Shetland during which latter all but confirms to be responsible for the sinking of USS Clarence E. Walsh using Masse Kernels and that Zherkhezhi was not in fact fully willing participant of or properly informed about Shetland's scheme, having just been used as an source of information on the kernels before murdering Zherkhezhi by cutting him down with katana, likely to prevent him from being captured by Third Echelon. With Shetland outed as the likely mastermind behind the theft of Masse Kernels and their use in new wave of information attacks, Sam's mission is updated to killing him before he escapes, despite his personal friendship with him. However, by the time Sam enters the teahouse, Shetland has already left the retreat via helicopter, leaving him with no choice but to exfiltrate...
