After the run with the Fowler 4F on the Coniston Branch, I got the idea to take the Caledonian Railway 600 class out for a spin. This is an engine that - from memory - hasn't featured on my channel before. She was made for Train Simulator by Victorian Lad, and is available on the Digital Traction website.

This is a run on a workshop route called 'Crabenmore Branch', going from Crabenmore to Portdornoch. Along the way we stop at Tarrbridge and Kalbrachan Ferry. This is a fictional route set in Scotland. As such, I thought it was a good route to run the 600 class on.

And just for the sake of annoying the purists, I decided to use Network Southeast coaches on this run. I know it's horrendously inaccurate, but - quite frankly - I couldn't care less about the purists. These NSE coaches were included in the NSE Class 47 pack.

Unfortunately information on the 600 class is extremely hard to come by. I've tried my best to put together a good description of the class:

The Caledonian Railway 600 class was a class of 0-8-0 tender engines, with eight of them being built at St. Rollox Works in 1901. They were designed for heavy freight trains, and they might have been the only 0-8-0 engines ever used by the Caledonian. I honestly don't know. What I do know is that - despite being built for freight work - the 600's were woefully underpowered (they were only given a power rating of 4F by the LMS). A similar situation happened with the 903 class 4-6-0's, better known as the Cardeans.

The eight engines were numbered 600 to 607. As far as I know, the reason for their strange-looking wheels was to allow the engine to pass through tight curves with ease. The engines lasted long enough to be absorbed into the London, Midland & Scottish Railway on the 1st of January, 1923. Under the LMS, the engines were renumbered 17990 to 17997.

Sadly all the 600 class locomotives had been withdrawn in the early 1930s, as they were deemed to be non-standard. Even worse, none of them survived into preservation.
