Training 3: Virginia SLMMs | Mine Placement / Avoidance | 688 (I) Hunter/Killer
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Captain Chang Plays... 688 (I) Hunter/Killer. In the previous episode, we tackled training mission 2, where we simulated a TLAM strike on the city of Freeport.
Now we do training mission 3.
Training Mission 3: Virginia SLMMs is a mobile mine deployment exercise. You are to load at least 6 Exercise SLMMs aboard, then deploy them to the 6 specified coordinates, which forms 3 sets of "gates". You then must use your HF sonar to navigate through all three gates, for a total of 9 goals.
Let's see if I still remember how to play this...
I streamed the radio buoy, but there are no updates.
I have the torpedo room load the 4 tubes with the exercise SLMMs, while we double- and quadruple-check the coordinates for all six mines, and started programming the first four. In hindsight, I probably should have launched 1-2 and 5-6 first, leaving 3-4 last as they are closer, but it didn't really matter here.
When the tubes are loaded, and coordinates verified one more time, they are launched with about 5-10 seconds in between each one.
Then we reloaded the tubes with 2 more, and launched those to the remaining coordinates, then reload the empty tubes with the exercise Mk 48 ADCAP torpedoes.
We then traveled to the northern gate, and went through at 5 kts. Then negotiated each set of gates in turn, using HF sonar to align properly.
Upon completing the final gate, we went past it a little, went to periscope depth, send up the radio antenna, and transmitted the mission report.
Mission accomplished. Full 1000 points earned.
All right! We're ready for the next training mission.
