11Can a diesel-electric submarine take on TEN sub-hunting destroyers? Today, we have an interesting deathmatch!
In one corner, we have the the Collins-class diesel electric submarine of the Royal Australian Navy. Designed in the 1980s, it wasn't constructed until early 1990s. Armed with modern weapons like the Mk 48 from the Americans, Collins remain a powerful weapons platform... If it can fire without being detected...
In the other corner, we have TEN Udaloy-class destroyers from the Soviet/Russian navy. The Udaloy has an emphasis on sub-hunting capabilities. It has a multitude of anti-submarine missiles, torpedoes, and RBU anti-submarine rocket launchers, not to mention anti-ship cannons if the target can be forced to the surface. It was featured in the 2018 movie Hunter Killer (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1846589/) as the main opponent (albeit in a fictional 2010s configuration).
While there's no doubt Collins can get a few kills in, can it survive the counter-attack? You may be surprised by the results...
