Trepang2 demo playthrough (Next Fest June 2023)
1I was initially on the fence about giving this demo a try, but it certainly seems to present a polished experience with solid core gameplay, and seems quite a bit more well-optimized than a few other recent Next Fest demos.
Trepang2 seems to take quite a few cues from F.E.A.R. in terms of gameplay and presentation, so this demo is worth a look if you're up for a modern rendition of a similar formula. The demo seems to suggest much more focus on action than horror, although it also seems to take a page out of the F.E.A.R. book in terms of the ridiculous things that can happen to ragdolls. There's also a bit at the beginning suggesting stealth mechanics, but those seem mostly pointless the moment you pick up a gun.
This is another demo where I was a bit worried about the visuals going in. For the most part, they seem fine, and the game does offer a few adjustments such as being able to scale or completely turn off motion blur. Some of the nighttime settings can definitely get a little hard on the eyes after enough time spent alternating between glaring brightness and squinting through darkness.
Judging by Steam reviews, the full campaign can be quite short, but there are also side missions, and a combat simulator which effectively functions as a horde mode, plus everything is playable across multiple difficulty levels.
