CrossCode first playthrough, part 6
In this segment: sandworm duty, some more sidequests (only some of which are reasonable), and another run-in with ol' Grasshead... who apparently just has cheat codes now.
I'm putting this playthrough on indefinite hiatus at this point. I've already been tiring of the relative density of sidequests vs. the extreme sparseness of actual meaningful plot development over the course of 20 hours after how many teasers were initially dropped in the first 30 minutes. On top of that, the action mechanics have clearly not been jiving with me the way that most ARPGs do; this is certainly partly due to the ridiculous amount of precision the game demands of you for projectile attacks to be at all useful.
When I hit the final round of the latest PvP match and saw the god-mode-tier crap your rival can do (which you absolutely cannot do, despite allegedly being the same character class), my patience absolutely ran out. But on top of that, apparently the PvP rounds are... losable with absolutely zero consequence? So why even put a player through that?! (Or at least make that clear up-front!)
The artwork and music in CrossCode is amazing (aside from the relative elevation of terrain sometimes being impossible to discern). I usually really like action RPGs and was originally really hyped about this one, but it ultimately doesn't feel satisfying to me, and I'll fully admit that parts of it may not be fully sinking in (and I have been unwittingly neglecting the Circuit).
I was interested in the plot, but I'm not willing to put in another 20 hours of effort on top of the 20 I've already spent just to find out if it actually lives up to the potential that was teased at the beginning. When the entire MMO environment is established as a distraction from the true plot, you need a far more solid breadcrumb trail to prevent players from feeling like you're stringing them along on filler for dozens of hours on end.
