[TRIP REPORT] Scenic Mount Fuji Views Onboard The Fujikawa Limited Express From Shizuoka To Kōfu
Limited Express Fujikawa is a relatively unknown train run by JR Central. It connects Shizuoka on the Tokaido Main Line with Kōfu on the Chuo Main Line via the Minobu Line. The train runs roughly every two hours and offers a fast connection between two major cities on the western side of Mount Fuji.
During the ride, passengers can view the famous mountain of Japan multiple times from different angles. Sit on the left hand side in travel direction when departing from Shizuoka or Kōfu and sit on the right hand side in travel direction if departing from Fuji for the best view. This may sound a bit confusing, but the train reverses direction at Fuji station so be sure to reserve your seat on the right side!
As of 2022 a Class 373 consisting of 3 cars is used for this train service. There is no green car (first class) onboard and only ordinary class is offered. However, each train set features 6 bay seats with a large table at the end of every car that can be booked by the whole party if not exceeding 4 people. These places are called "rooms" on the Japan Railway reservation system and be reserved free of charge with the Japan Rail Pass
The Fujikawa make stops at the following stations: Shizuoka – Shimizu – Fuji – Fujinomiya – Utsubuna – Minobu – Shimobe-onsen – Kai-Iwama – Kajikazawaguchi – Ichikawa-Daimon – Higashi-Hanawa – Minami-Kōfu – Kōfu. The Minobu line also has a local service running from Fuji to Kōfu with higher frequencies on the Fuji - Nishi-Fujinomiya and Kajikazawaguchi - Kōfu sections.
