Getting useful feedback on the narrative of a game can be notoriously difficult: by the time a playtester can experience the story in your game, it’s usually already too late to make any significant changes. With this in mind, Jonathan Dankoff (user researcher on Assassin’s Creed) developed a method which allows Ubisoft to apply a simple research methodology on a game’s story, early enough for it to be valuable for the writers working on it. He will share his experience with the difficulties of properly testing narrative in games, and then explain the methodology used and explain how it was successfully used on Ubisoft productions to generate actionable feedback.

Jonathan Dankoff
Jonathan oversees all of the user research on the Assassin’s Creed brand, including the entire scope of user testing on the brand from conception through post-launch, creating long-term scheduling based on production milestones, and resource planning to ensure proper coverage of the game.

Being the link between Ubisoft’s User Research Lab and the development team, Jonathan ensures efficient cooperation and a steady flow of information between the teams, directing a team of analysts to provide objectives, test materials, and guidance both on-site in Montreal and coordinating with analysts at other Ubisoft studios. .
