In this video, I take a focused look at the Linux port of Total War Warhammer from a technical and performance aspect.

I used the following Nvidia drivers throughout this video, unless specified otherwise:
Ubuntu with 367.27 (recommended by Feral)
Windows with 375.95

I benchmarked multiple driver versions, but did not experience any difference in performance regardless of driver version used.

Total War Warhammer is running with DirectX11 and DirectX12 in Windows, and on Linux it's running an OpenGL 4 context.

I maxed out the game by setting it to Ultra, then manually enabling Depth Of Field, Screen Space Reflections, Vignette, and Shadow Detail to Extreme. I kept AA to FXAA.

On Windows, power settings are set to High Performance. On Ubuntu, cpufreq is also set to Performance.

On Ubuntu and on Windows I utilized the in-game FPS counter to ensure that it calculated the frames the same way.

To collect the frametimes and frame logs, I used GLXOSD v3 on Ubuntu and FRAPs on Windows. I was unable to gather frametimes for DX12 as all tools on Windows did not work during my testing (Fraps, MSI afterburner, PrecisionX).

All benchmarks and recordings were done with the game being in fullscreen mode.

I hope I have not made any mistakes. I took about 3 days to make this video. The tests were redone a number of times, to ensure no anomalies appeared in the results.

Please feel free to share your experience in the comments below, but I do ask that you at least run through the same settings in the benchmark as I have to keep your experience as close as 1:1 to that of my own.

Feel like I might have missed any important information or have questions? Post in the comments! I'll answer if I can.

This video is recorded at 1080p 60fps. A Blackmagic Intensity Pro 4k was used to record the footage on a separate machine, so no performance loss happens due to recording.

If you love RTS games, enjoy the Warhammer universe, then Total War Warhammer is a must get for your Linux gaming library! If only multiplayer was cross-platform. This really is the achilles heel of this port.
