Ultima IX - Tidbits #25: Make backpack to be inventory item (and Wrong prison mechanics)
When the Wrong prison guards get you, you lose only the equipment that you currently have. So if you prepare a bag next to the chest where you can recover your things, you can place the backpack into it. You will have your things back, but the backpack, itself, still stays as an item there, too.
You can't "open" the backpack like you would do with a bag. However, you can get as many backpacks as you want if you keep letting the guards catch you, but the game remembers which backpack has the confiscated objects.
You can put the bag into your (real, inventory) backpack, but if you but the backpack item, itself, there or you pull it on the Avatar, it simply vanishes.
Bonus:
If you put things into the chest, the backpack won't appear there, you simply get all your things back one moment after you lost them.
Might be useful where you want to get caught, but you don't want to make the trip to the chest. I could imagine luring a guard as close to the glyph as possible, so after getting it, you intentionally get caught and this way the exit might be closer than when you run to the teleport room, pull the lever, get teleported into the spider room, etc.
EDIT: Further info:
-The backpack item can't be sold to any shop I checked.
-Recovering the latest backpack while having the previous backpack icon recovers it, too.
-Once you put the bag that contains the backpack icon into your backpack, moving it anywhere simply vanishes it.
-If you glitch-wield non-wieldable objects when getting caught, recovering your backpack simply makes them appear around you as they fit in that small room. The cadaver I wore was put into the middle of the neighbouring corridor, for example.
