Ultima IX - Greater Trick #3: Equip Any Inventory Item!
After the last video I experimented more in case I can smuggle a non-inventory object into the inventory, but I found something almost as or maybe even more interesting:
If your inventory and toolbelt are full when you do the object wearing glitch you can actually use a normal inventory item, too, and it will get into the Avatar's hands instead of into the inventory or to the ground as it normally happens when trying to pick up items without this glitch.
I count it as a Greater Trick not only because this way you can hold a glyph in your hands, rather also the potential: non-inventory objects are all the same without any interaction scripts, but the inventory items are all different. Can we drink held potions? Can we hold the magic book or the backpack?
One other emerging question is already answered in the video: NPCs do recognize that you are having the given object and they also can remove it nicely without crashes or anything, like it was in your inventory.
Also, finally you can wield daggers, even if you get just standard fist attack power, like with all tried objects and items I know.
Important:
In this video and in my earlier attempts (not uploaded, I kept only this best one) the item vanished when equipping something that the developers intended to be equippable and of course this is instant plot grindhalt without further glitches, cheats or speedrunning tactics, but off-camera I could do once that after equipping a normal weapon, the glyph appear above me, like the barrel did in the previous video. I don't know the exact conditions. Might be because I didn't actually "have been given" the glyph, rather placed it into the sack to experiment with it later (like, putting it on the shrine in sack form), but other items vanish, too.
This all makes me think that there is a hidden equipemnt slot, a "clipboard", where received and removed weapons/armour/objects/items are stored for a moment before the engine decides if they are equippable or be thrown on the ground, etc. Maybe there are rules for when the cut object can be pasted back into existence and when does something overwrite it.
These all can mean many things, but if we look at it with cold mind and dry realism, we actually have one more inventory space. O_-
EDIT: new finds as of 2022-01-27:
- if you put a weapon/shield/lantern into inventory/toolbelt just before a Wizard Eye cast, then after the cast but before moving you can glitch wield inventory objects directly from your backpack no matter if you have empty slots or not. Wizard Eye actually disables all collision so much that you can't pick up objects and can't talk to NPCs.
- Pulling an object onto the attack or defense bar normally does nothing, but when you do it to glitch-wield an object it will be nicely glitch-wielded
