Ultima IX - Strange Secret #2: Meaning of "empty" Well of Souls page
Ever since my first playthrough, I was wondering about this note paper page, being seemingly empty and being the only note item that had a folded corner like with books.
I never could do anything with it. I hoped the Spanish or the German translation would show something, but nothing... till this very day.
I wonder if persons cleverer than me already found this, but the solution is simply to use the pageDown, pageUp buttons. Since clicking on the fold just closes the note, I tried those button keys and so there. The trick is that the note only accepts one interaction for each opening, so you need to open it again to reveal that this page is... the contents of the book that can be foundin the destroyed town near Yew.
It being there and working so strange can be attributed to an oversight? Was a book content rendered as a page item, resulting this behaviour? Or rather this was to be a hard to reveal message to begin with, just a bit easier to handle?
In the end of the video, I go to the (not) warrior spirit. Reading the aforementioned book is what gives the conversation options to put him at rest. So, since this page tells the same, maybe it serves the same purpose. Why? The other two spirit mini-quests in the Well of Souls can be completed without leaving the area, but normally this one not. Except that now we know that the book can be read here in a certain form. Might have been for debug purposes, too.
In the final game, these mini-quests are optional, but maybe in a previous time they wasn't, after all, the monk at Empath Abbey has varying conversation options before and after doing the spirit mini-quest related to the Candle of Love, despite the fact that it can be grabbed at any time in the game. (In this playthrough, I got it even before speaking with Lord British. Sequence breaking is sacred and it has a very strong light that comes handy, especially when experimenting in the dark, for example at non-cleansed shrines.)
By all means... finally I solved my empty paper mystery!
