Ultima IX - Tidbits #30: Death during the Minoc scene
I like luring enemies and other NPCs to places where they naturally don't appear and while doing so in Minoc, I found that the monsters don't stop being agressive right while it starts, since in the beginning there's no speech (in fact, the entireity of it is just scripted camera movement and captions), just the Avatar walking as script-forced, so a skeleton can kill him...
...but then the scene goes on almost like nothing happened.
The first difference is that there's no speech (this happens also when the Avatar is there, but Blackthorn is lured away). Then the two farmers don't die, for there are no fireballs (here a vulture killed one of them, but that's different).
What is really interesting is the allegiances of the various NPCs. The skeleton attacks the Rom Baro's daughter first (that's why the Avatar needs to die quick or else the monster just changes target) and the Rom Baro is also a possible target. We see that a nearby guard comes to counter attack the skeleton.
What I couldn't capture on camera but is the most interesting is that other guards can arrive, too, but they don't necessarily attack the skeleton first, at two of my tries the newly arrived guards targeted the first guard and only when it died (I could then collect the resulting money) did they attack the skeleton.
I kept looking towards the tents before in my best attempt (which the first one was, so I couldn't record it) the ghost also started to attack the potion seller, causing other ruckus.
This whole might be even more fun at the other similar scenes, like the first Guardian meeting or the end of the final fight. After all, where one can't lure an enemy, summoning undead or demon still must be a possibility.
